After an introduction meeting with the tour leader and the guide, I decided to join two ladies that were traveling together for a walk around the small town that we were staying at. The surroundings were very nice, but by that time it was close to noon and close to the equator that means that there was barely any shade, which at 30 degree temperatures was a bit much for me to handle. Moreover, we were following directions from a couple that had made the walk earlier that day, but since we were not sure if they said to go right before or after the bridge and since we could not see a bridge taking us back over the canal after walking for quite some time, we decided to go back, which later turned out to not be the best decision as there actually was a bridge across the canal that would have taken us back to the hotel at least 20 – 25 minutes faster. Upon our return to the hotel I cooled off in the swimming pool and to replenish the salts that I had lost perspiring during our walk, I had pringles for lunch.
Around four we left for a boat trip (which of course automatically resulted in an upgrade of this vacation from a “regular” vacation to a “real” vacation). After this trip we went on shore near a lovely cottage where we received a special leave which is traditionally used to welcome guests. After washing our hands we were served a tasty local dinner which we ate without utensils. I also ordered a cocktail with arak, a spirit that is made from sap from the coconut flower, I can really recommend it. Like most of the dinners during this trip, the whole thing was complemented with live music, but unlike most of the other dinners during this trip, the musicians were playing local instruments and having an original repertoire. Towards the end of our trip we had a nagging suspicion that there is only one school in Sri Lanka for musicians to learn a foreign repertoire, which consisted of about 15 songs which were popular at least 20 years ago or longer and the teacher seemed to not know the lyrics of some parts of these songs, but for that all students learned to lower their volume and look around. In every place we visited these same songs were performed and towards the end I did start to grow a bit tired of them.
