Day 5

This was another day of a lot of mileage and this time the landscape got more and more empty. Unfortunately we had missed the African equivalent of tulip season by about three weeks, but at first a lot of greens had still remained, yet it would get increasingly brown and barren. It seemed like every single meter of highway was flanked with fences, endless fences. I think that this fencing was literally uninterrupted along our entire route in South Africa and the route in Namibia South of Swakopmund. I figured if this science thing fails, there will always be a future for me in selling and/or maintaining fences in south-west Africa.
At the Oranje River we turned left before the border post to Namibia to reach our campsite. Willem took a swim in the river, but I skipped it. In the campsite bar, the ceiling was covered with items retrieved from the river, including a sign in school book Afrikaans that I would like to have for my office and that towards the end of the trip I wanted to hang over me pretty much all the time.
