11 September 2018 | Zuid-Afrika, Simon's Town
We were taken to the Cape Peninsula. First we visited the penguin colony at Boulder’s Beach near Simon’s Town. Everybody knows that penguin clips on YouTube are as good as cat clips, when you are at work and in strong need of some distraction, so it was a very relaxing experience. As spring was starting on this continent we could see a number of penguin mothers with offspring of various sizes.
Then we continued to the Cape of Good Hope. You may have been thinking that this is the most southern part of Africa, but turns out it is not! The true Southern most part is quite a bit further south about 150 km further east , but the Cape of Good Hope is apparently much more easily accessible, therefore all tourists are lured to this southern most point of WEST Africa. We got some time to walk around and saw a baby whale swimming in the ocean below and a puff adder that we might have almost stepped on, if the lady on front of us had not jumped up upon almost stepping on it. On the top of the Cape I tried to match a picture that my cousin send the week before, where he is on the edge of the big drop to the sea. Of course with my guts and impaired level of balance, I did not stand on the ledge for a picture, but got down to lay on the edge and asked Willem to take a picture from an angle that made it look like I was falling over. It’s safe to say that the results were not as I expected, as I look like a beached whale at best.
On our way to the campsite along the coast, we spotted our first 2 ostriches. They were not the first ostriches I’ve ever seen in the wild, but they were the first ones that I saw almost paddling in the ocean, which somehow I found to be a very interesting sight.
At the campsite we discovered that our tents were larger than I anticipated and larger than our tents in Iceland last year, which I believe significantly reduced the amount of cursing between Willem and me (although a tent cannot work miracles, so you can rest assured that plenty of tent-and-other-discomfort-related cursing remained throughout this trip).
The tent was even big enough for Willem to perform most of his exercises in the tent. Having only recently recovered from a herniated disk, he diligently performed his exercises to hopefully be able to handle the long drives and nights on a mat in a tent. In the morning after breakfast he would also often separate himself from the group for some additional exercises and since many of those exercises originate from yoga exercises, people in our group suspected at first that he was some kind of yogi (I guess a smaller tent would have made it clear much sooner that this is not the case). After a chilly night around the campfire, I did use the thermo-underwear from last year, one more time to stay warm during the night.
