I almost had deer for dinner tonight and I mean that quite literally. Driving home I had a close encounter with a deer, not while driving through the park (and park here is somewhat bigger than the Leidse Hout), but in a residential area by daylight. I was quite lucky that the road there is going down quite steeply, so my foot was on the break already and I was also lucky that mom started running when seeing me and that her 3 calves waited for me to pass until they crossed. However, had I hit one of them (and killed them doing it), I would have been allowed to make them my dinner, as can be read on page 61 of the ‘Digest of Ohio Motor Vehicle Laws’: “If you hit a deer and cause its death, you may take possession of the deer by law, as long as you report the collision to a game protector (no clue what ‘game’ the protector is protecting) or other law enforcement officer within 24 hours. The protector or officer will then investigate (so I assume you cannot eat it straight away) and issue a certificate entitling you to the carcass. It is illegal to take a deer carcass without reporting it.”

Wat als je nou een beer of lynx doodrijd? of een lekker mals mensenkindje? Mag je die dan ook fijn bbq-en en oppeuzelen nadat je dit hebt gemeld bij de autoriteiten, of gelden er verschillende regels voor verschillende beesten? -

Da's dan beter geregeld dan hier in Nederland. Als je hier wild aanrijdt, mag je het juist niet zelf meenemen (de auto achter je wel, overigens ???)
Overigens moet je het karkas toch eerst laten verbloeden, dus die maaltijd binnen 24 uur kun sowieso wel vergeten! ;-)

I check also on page 62, but the text only mentiones deer, nothing else. Also, it does not say what to do if you do not want to have a dead deer in your trunk, but I only have the digest, perhaps I need to get the official law books for that. -
