Mexico, Mexiiihiiiiiiiiiiiiiiico… Dinner with asparagus in February, how great! Anyway, currently it’s raining outside, while I’m reporting home about my ‘day in the sun’ yesterday. This has the potential to be so poetic :p
The clinical pharmacology group here is not very big, but since last Monday we have an additional member, a Dutch pharmacy master student from Groningen. I think with that addition, the Dutch almost equal the ‘others’ in numbers.
Last week the weather has been quite nice. Not only was it sunny, but temperatures had actually increased to positive numbers, even on the centigrade scale. We crazy foreigners wanted to enjoy the nice weather, implying we actually wanted to be OUTSIDE. So we drove across the Ohio river in down town Cincinnati to the Kentucky side, to a place called Newport. This is marketed as a ‘world away from the everyday’, with a lot of entertainment condensed in one location. It has stores, a movie theatre, many pubs and restaurants, an aquarium and we were told it also has a river walk. We were looking forward to strolling around enjoying the weather, but obviously, the stores are indoors and the river walk was just a stretch of concrete along the river. There were indeed many things to do, or actually many things to consume. So after a rather short walk around the place, we bought a (small) ice-cream and sat on a bench in the sun. Then we walked across another bridge, to a small park on the Ohio side of the river and sat in the grass facing the sun some more. After walking back we had a drink on a ‘terrasje’, again in the sun (unfortunately no rosé, since I had to drive) and then we moved on.
We were invited by our Thai colleague to join the Chinese New Year / Spring Festival party, that some of her friends were participating in. It took some time to find the parking garage, since my GPS system is stupid, but only when you really need it not to be stupid. However after a number of illegal moves (luckily there was not much traffic), we made it there.
It had free Chinese food, so that attracts a crowd everywhere. Funny thing was that by the time we arrived they ran out of the plastic forks that they had, but they did find a bunch of chopsticks somewhere. So when we sat down amongst the many Asians, the white people were eating with chopsticks while the Asians had white plastic forks.
The program that followed had a very high ‘buurthuisgehalte’ and was mostly in Chinese, but it beat staying at home watching tv.

Elke:
I did not drink rose, because I still had to drive, not because they don't have it. But you will find out soon enough exactly how great the taste is of the population here! -
